Akuru Mithuru was a collaborative community service initiative under Rotary District 3220, launched to support primary school students whose education was disrupted by the impact of Cyclone Ditwah. Initially conceptualised by the Rotary Club of Nova Ceylon, the project functioned as a large-scale partnership between the Rotaract District Steering Committee and 10 Rotaract clubs, including Singer Sri Lanka and various campus and community-based clubs. The initiative focused on mobilising resources through a nationwide donation drive. Strategic collection points were established at various outlets across the country, supported by corporate partners Singer Sri Lanka and MintPay, the latter of which offered incentives to donors. While the project originally targeted families affected by the cyclone, it strategically pivoted to support rural students in Gampaha after government aid met the initial needs. The project’s central objective was to to provide essential educational stationery and resources to primary school students (Grades 1–5) affected by natural disasters and economic hardships. To foster a sense of unity and collaboration within the Rotary family by engaging multiple Rotaract clubs and corporate partners in a single high-impact district project. To establish an efficient nationwide logistics and collection network for physical and monetary donations. To alleviate the financial burden on rural families in the Gampaha region regarding their children’s educational expenses. To promote the spirit of volunteerism and community resilience through strategic public relations and youth-led action.
